SERIOUS update!

Geez, I totally lost track of this for awhile!  Without adding the updates during the summer, here are the latest pictures up to this point.  Much dirt has been moved; a retaining wall put in both in the front yard and by the driveway; doors & windows have been added; painting has been done; the list goes on & on!!!

Framing has begun!!! Although I was ill with strep throat and unable to assist, the volunteers and other kind folks related to Habitat worked hard during cold weather on January 24 to get some framing done. It looks amazing, and it's so hard to believe it's really coming true! God is so good!

October 22, 2008

Since the groundbreaking ceremony took place, we have made some serious progress. The land has been cleared more, the brush has been burned, and the foundation walls have been set. This coming weekend, we will be putting in blue board insulation around the inside of the foundation walls. After that, gravel will be compacted, blue board added on top, and the concrete pad will be poured. Once the concrete pad is poured and set, we can start framing!

Also, I only have 65 more hours of sweat equity to put in!

Bank of America and Buchheit Break Ground for Habitat for Humanity House # 35

Cape Girardeau, MO – On Sunday, September 28, 2008, the team of Bank of America Foundation and Buchheit Inc. joined forces with the volunteers from Habitat for Humanity-Cape Area Inc. to break ground for the local Habitat’s 35th house. With newly donated support from these two generous benefactors, Cape Area Habitat is moving forward to build and sell this simple, decent, affordable house to Habitat partner and future homeowner Iris Mayhall and her son, Jeremy (age 6).

Bank of America Foundation provided a grant of $30,000 for House # 35, and Buchheit donated $23,000 of materials for the house. According to Terry Tuschhoff, Bank of America’s local market President, “Bank of America is fully committed to fostering the success of the communities where we serve, and we invest as we do to improve the quality of life of all who live and work here. Working with Habitat’s partner families and with Habitat’s many volunteers in this important project is one important way we walk our talk.” Buchheit’s Chris Childers, Executive in charge of Building Materials for Buchheit Stores, explained, “Since 1934, Buchheit Stores have supplied materials and services to businesses and families in this region, and our investment in these important Habitat projects alongside Habitat for Humanity’s many volunteers is one of our ways of thanking our customers for their faithful patronage of our business over so many years. And, it delights all our employees that we do this together.”

In this very uncertain financial climate, Cape Area Habitat is moving forward to undertake its fourth house this year. It expects to break ground on three additional houses—one each in Cape Girardeau County, Perryville, and Sikeston—later this Fall. Current financial conditions impose new discipline on every American homeowner, and Habitat’s thorough credit reviews and selection procedures help insure Habitat homeowners, who earn less than 50% of the local median income, are able, and continue to make their monthly mortgage payments on time. According to Habitat Board President Thomas M. Meyer, “Recession or no, credit crisis or no, the housing needs of local Habitat-qualifying families remain urgent, and the commitment of our volunteers and generous Habitat donors has never been more important. All who volunteer and toil for our Habitat families are deeply grateful for this wonderful generosity by Bank of America and their local employees, and by Buchheit and their local employees. Without this steadfast support, Habitat could not fulfill its Christian Mission here.”

As the three Habitat projects now underway in Cape Girardeau advance toward completion (located at 1428 Ozark St, 1115 Good Hope St., and 341 Country Club Drive), Habitat volunteers now begin the fourth house here this year at 410 Country Club Drive. No date has been set for the groundbreaking of this year’s fifth Habitat build, however, Habitat is searching Jackson for a build site. Each house requires 3,000 hours of volunteer labor for construction, part provided by the new homeowner as sweat equity. Habitat encourages everyone wishing to volunteer (16 years of age or older) to contact Becky Fluchel in Cape Area Habitat’s office at 573-334-9728 for a location, date, and time.
